One of the basic constructions of Mandarin Chinese involves verbs that are “doubled” or repeated consecutively with a negative in the middle. This format is the basis for a very common phrase, “you mei you” in Hanyu Pinyin, or 有没有 in Chinese characters.
有没有 = you mei you = do you have …?
you = 有
mei = 没
For example:
你有没有中文名字?(ni you mei you zhongwen mingzi?) = Do you have a Chinese name?
